I served as Associate Chair of the Electrical Engineering (EE) Department and Chair of the EE Graduate Admissions Committee from 1996 until 2000. I remained a member of the EE Graduate Admissions Committee (until changing to emeritus status in Sept 2003), but Professor R. Fabian Pease took over chairmanship of the Committee and he now has primary responsibility for EE graduate admissions. You might be interested to know that each application for admission is reviewed by the graduate admissions staff and by at least one other EE faculty member in addition to the Chair of the admissions committee. In many cases applications are circulated to specific faculty members for their additional opinions. Everything is looked at: academic record, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and test results. It is a time consuming process, but we are heavily committed to identifying the best graduate students to work with the EE faculty. The one instruction given to me when I was appointed chairman was to identify and recruit the very best EE students in the world, and that is still the goal of the EE Department.
