Palmer Station Site Visit Diary

Entry 7: March 28, 1999

Sunday at the station. All of the station crew get the day off and it is very quite without the fork lifts and bulldozers moving about which is the case on a normal day. I cleaned BetaMax number three (the only one now in use that was here when I got here) and spent some time trying to figure out how to do the system calibrations (I need to talk to Mike and Bill about that). After lunch I went up the glacier to inspect the antenna. One of the antenna cables is brushing up against the antenna tower so I might try and rotate the tower to see if I can correct this.

I took the other path down the glacier ending up on the opposite side of Hero inlet from the station. I got a good look at a leopard seal from atop a ledge looking down into the inlet. It just sat there breathing hard and every once in a while it would turn its head to see what I was up to. More disturbing were the skua birds I found watching me when I was ready to leave. Every few steps I would take one of them would buzz me. They must have a chick hidden away somewhere close by.
